Why Mindset Matters: Olympic Lessons for Your New Life in the UK

Olympic athlete and NLP master practitioner Anastasia Fox on the mindset that carries you through rebuilding a life in a new country — one controllable step at a time.

"You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step." — Martin Luther King Jr.

In 1980, I competed at the Moscow Olympic Games. Decades later, when I arrived in the UK and faced five of the hardest years of my life — rebuilding everything from nothing, in a language and system I barely understood — it was that same Olympic training that carried me through, not the medal itself, but the mindset behind it.

Elite athletes are trained to focus on the next controllable action, not the size of the mountain ahead. Facing a mountain of UK paperwork, an unfamiliar system, or a setback at work or in a benefits claim, the same principle applies: you cannot solve everything today, but you can take the next right step today.

This is the thinking behind my empowerment mentoring work, built on 25 years of NLP practice alongside that lived experience — helping people reframe setbacks, rebuild confidence, and set goals that are ambitious but genuinely achievable, one stage at a time.

As I often tell my clients: change your relationship with the obstacle, and the obstacle changes.

This mindset work, and the fuller story behind it, forms the heart of my forthcoming book, Anastasia's Art of Life — including a practical 21-Day Challenge readers can use to build momentum in their own lives.
