Understanding and Protecting Your Immigration Status
Your immigration status underpins work, benefits, healthcare and housing. How to check your status, renew on time, and avoid rogue advisers — only OISC-registered advisers may give immigration advice.
Your immigration status underpins almost everything else — work, benefits, healthcare, housing, and family life — so understanding and protecting it deserves real attention.
Know exactly which category you hold (for example, settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, a work visa, or indefinite leave to remain) and what conditions attach to it, such as any "no recourse to public funds" restriction, visa expiry date, or work limitations. You can check and prove your status at any time using the UK government's free online "view and prove your immigration status" service — always use the official GOV.UK site.
Renew or extend your status well before it expires; leaving it too late can create serious, sometimes irreversible, problems. If your circumstances change — a new job, a change of address, a change in family circumstances — check whether you need to update the Home Office.
Be alert to rogue advisers. Only people or organisations registered with the Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner (OISC), or qualified immigration solicitors, are legally allowed to give immigration advice in the UK. Anyone charging cash-in-hand with no paperwork, or promising guaranteed outcomes, is a serious red flag.
Keep digital and physical copies of every immigration document somewhere safe and separate from the originals.
