Disability Benefits — PIP, Children's DLA & Pension Age Disability

A complete advisor guide to UK disability support across all age groups, including Disability Living Allowance for children, PIP for working-age adults, and Attendance Allowance for pension age.

The UK social security system offers dedicated financial support for individuals living with long-term disabilities, severe physical health conditions, or mental health challenges. Rather than offering a single universal disability scheme, support is divided into distinct benefits tailored to three life stages: childhood, working age, and retirement. These benefits are non-means-tested, tax-free, and designed to help meet the extra costs associated with disability.

  1. Children Under 16: Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for Children Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for Children helps parents and carers cover the additional care and mobility costs for a child under 16 who has care needs or walking difficulties significantly greater than a child of the same age without a disability. In Scotland, this is replaced by Child Disability Payment.

DLA for Children has two components:

  • Care Component: Awarded if the child needs attention, supervision, or watching over during the day or night.
    • Lowest Rate: £30.30 per week
    • Middle Rate: £76.70 per week
    • Highest Rate: £114.60 per week
  • Mobility Component: Awarded if the child has severe difficulty walking or cannot walk outdoors without guidance.
    • Lower Rate (from age 5): £30.30 per week
    • Higher Rate (from age 3): £80.00 per week
  1. Working-Age Adults (16 to State Pension Age): Personal Independence Payment (PIP) Working-age adults receive support through Personal Independence Payment (PIP), or Adult Disability Payment (ADP) in Scotland. PIP assesses how a condition impacts daily living activities and outdoor mobility.

PIP Payment Rates for 2026/27:

  • Daily Living Component:
    • Standard Rate: £76.70 per week
    • Enhanced Rate: £114.60 per week
  • Mobility Component:
    • Standard Rate: £30.30 per week
    • Enhanced Rate: £80.00 per week
  1. Pensioners (State Pension Age and Over): Attendance Allowance Once you reach State Pension age, new claims for disability support are made under Attendance Allowance, or Pension Age Disability Payment (PADP) in Scotland. Unlike PIP or DLA, Attendance Allowance focuses exclusively on personal care and supervision needs and does not include a separate mobility component.

Attendance Allowance Payment Rates for 2026/27:

  • Lower Rate: £76.70 per week (awarded if you require frequent help or constant supervision during either the day OR the night)
  • Higher Rate: £114.60 per week (awarded if you require help or supervision during BOTH day and night, or if you are terminally ill)

Connected Premiums and Additional Help Receiving a qualifying rate of PIP, DLA, or Attendance Allowance can unlock valuable extra support across other services:

  • Carer's Allowance / Carer Element: A relative or friend providing at least 35 hours of care per week may qualify for Carer's Allowance (£83.30 per week) or the Universal Credit Carer Element (£205.85 per month).
  • Motability Scheme: Claimants receiving the Enhanced Rate Mobility component of PIP or DLA can swap their mobility allowance to lease a new car, wheelchair-accessible vehicle, scooter, or powered wheelchair.
  • Council Tax Discounts: Severe disability discounts or exemptions may apply to your council tax bill.
  • Means-tested Premiums: Receiving disability benefits increases the threshold and premiums in means-tested benefits like Pension Credit, Universal Credit, and Housing Benefit.
