Pension Credit: Extra Money in Retirement
A comprehensive guide to Pension Credit in 2026/27, covering Guarantee Credit rates, Savings Credit, eligibility, passported benefits such as free TV licences, and how to apply.
Retirement should be a comfortable time of life, yet many older adults live on tight budgets without realised potential from missing out on financial support. Pension Credit is a tax-free benefit aimed at pensioners living on a low income. Beyond providing direct weekly payments, receiving Pension Credit unlocks a wide array of extra financial benefits, making it one of the most vital forms of support for older households.
The Two Parts of Pension Credit
Pension Credit is made up of two distinct parts: Guarantee Credit and Savings Credit. You may qualify for one or both depending on your circumstances.
1. Guarantee Credit
Guarantee Credit tops up your weekly income to a guaranteed minimum level set by the government.
For the 2026/27 tax year, Guarantee Credit tops up your weekly income to:
- £238.00 per week if you are single.
- £363.25 per week if you are in a couple.
Your total income includes your State Pension, workplace or private pensions, and earnings from work.
2. Savings Credit
Savings Credit provides extra income for individuals who saved money towards their retirement, such as through a workplace pension. You can only make a new claim for Savings Credit if you reached State Pension age before 6 April 2016.
For 2026/27, the maximum Savings Credit amounts are:
- Up to £17.96 per week for single pensioners.
- Up to £20.10 per week for couples.
Additional Premiums and Additions
You can receive higher Pension Credit amounts if you have extra needs. Additional weekly allowances include:
- Severe Disability Addition: £86.05 per week if you receive Attendance Allowance or the PIP daily living component.
- Carer Addition: £48.15 per week if you are entitled to Carer's Allowance.
- Dependent Children Additions: Extra weekly support if you are responsible for raising children or young people.
Savings and Capital Rules
Capital under £10,000 is completely ignored when working out your Pension Credit entitlement. If you have savings or investments above £10,000, every £500 (or part of £500) over £10,000 is counted as £1 per week of income. There is no maximum savings limit for Pension Credit.
Valuable Passported Benefits
Even a small award of Guarantee Credit acts as a gateway to other significant financial savings, including:
- Free TV licence for household members aged 75 or over.
- Full Housing Benefit covering up to 100% of eligible rent.
- Full Council Tax Reduction to lower or eliminate your local council bill.
- Warm Home Discount scheme payments during winter.
- Free NHS dental care, eye tests, and vouchers towards glasses.
