Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA): What You Need to Know
An overview of New Style Jobseeker's Allowance, detailing eligibility based on National Insurance contributions, weekly benefit rates for 2026/27, claimant commitments, and how to apply.
Losing a job or searching for new employment can feel daunting, but financial support is available to help keep you on your feet. New Style Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) is a fortnightly benefit paid to individuals who are unemployed or working reduced hours while actively seeking employment. Unlike income-based benefits, New Style JSA relies on your past National Insurance contributions rather than your household income or personal savings.
How New Style JSA Works
New Style JSA is a contribution-based benefit. It is available to adults between 16 and State Pension age who are out of work or working fewer than 16 hours per week on average.
Because it is based on your individual work history, New Style JSA offers several key advantages:
- Your savings and investments do not affect your entitlement.
- Your partner's income and savings are not taken into account.
- It can be claimed on its own or alongside Universal Credit if you qualify for extra income support.
New Style JSA can be paid for up to 182 days (roughly six months). During this time, you also receive Class 1 National Insurance credits, which help protect your State Pension record and eligibility for future state benefits.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for New Style JSA in 2026/27, you must meet the following criteria:
- You have worked as an employee and paid sufficient Class 1 National Insurance contributions in the last two full tax years.
- You are available for work and actively looking for employment.
- You are under State Pension age.
- You live in England, Scotland, or Wales.
If you receive an occupational or private pension over £50 per week, your weekly JSA payments may be reduced by the amount that exceeds £50.
JSA Payment Rates for 2026/27
The amount of JSA you receive depends on your age. For the 2026/27 tax year, the standard weekly rates are:
| Age Group | Weekly Rate | | --- | --- | | Single, aged under 25 | £75.65 per week | | Single, aged 25 or over | £95.55 per week |
JSA is paid directly into your bank or building society account every two weeks.
Your Claimant Commitment and Jobcentre Meetings
When your claim is approved, you will be assigned a work coach at your local Jobcentre Plus. Together, you will create a document called a Claimant Commitment. This document outlines the practical steps you agree to take each week to search for employment, such as updating your CV, searching job boards, and attending interviews.
In most cases, you are expected to spend up to 35 hours per week looking for work. You will attend regular check-ins—usually every two weeks—with your work coach to demonstrate your job search activity. If you fail to meet the conditions in your Claimant Commitment without a good reason, your payments may be temporarily paused under a benefit sanction.
How to Apply
Applying for New Style JSA is straightforward and completed online. You will need your National Insurance number, employment details for the past two years, and your bank account details.
You can submit your application through the GOV.UK New Style JSA portal. If you cannot apply online, you can call the Jobcentre Plus helpline for assistance over the phone.
